Default Have an 89 Civic Hatchback Automatic and having power steering problems?

well, i drive a 1989 civic hatchback dx automatic with about 145k miles on it.i've been having power steering problems lately, its harder to turn and when i do turn it makes a squeaking noise. its still squeaks once in a while even while i drive straight or turn lightly. its easier to turn the wheel when im driving at a higher speed than trying to park the car, which is a PAIN!so if you can help me pin point the problem and give me an estimate on how much it would be to repair, that would be great. thank you!

the problem is caused by low power steering pump pressure.it could be very simply that you are low on power steering fluid after 20 years. check the power steering reservoir and add it if necessary (it probably will be necessary)--about $4 to buy the fluidyou may also have a slipping belt but that usually results in a 'skipping' feeling where you have assist then you don't. still, if the belt is old, change it--about $10 for the belt; about $35 installedif the pump reservoir is full and the belt is tight you'll need a power steering pump. rebuilt pumps are probably about $75 for the part plus $50 to installif the reservoir is low and it goes low again after refilling then you probably have a leak. replacing a leaking o-ring on a hose is about $30one note: when you add the power steering fluid you need to bleed the air out. to do that, fill the reservoir up then start the engine. turn the wheel all the way to the left and hold it there at the stop for 5 seconds, then turn the wheel all the way to the right and hold it at the stop for 5 seconds then do it twice move left to right.hope that helps.
