Default Why does the 2008 Honda Civc Hybrid have 4 shift options (D, D3, 2, 1) if it's a CVT transmission?

CVT's have no gears so what purpose do the shift options give and what happens when you try to shift through it like a manual?

My guess is that it gives you more control. For example if you were stuck in a snow bank you would shift to 1 or 2 to make it easier to get out of the snow bank, D3 would help with acceleration. With CVT alone you wont be able to do this.

My 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid only has three forward choices, D(rive), S(econd) and L(ow). From the Owner's Manual, Page 194.Selecting Secondshifts the transmission into a lowerrange of ratios for betteracceleration and increased enginebraking. Use Second when you aregoing down a steep hill.Use Low to get morepower when climbing, and formaximum engine braking whengoing down steep hills. You change the "range of ratios" used by the CVT. Remember that just because it does not have fixed gears does not mean that it does not vary the gear ratio as you drive. It simply uses a different mechanism to vary the gear ratio.
