Car starts idles good for about 5 mins then shuts off! I restart it again and I have to give it gas to keep it alive... Runs like crap. When I took it on a drive last night I could barely get to 30 mphs! Its carberated and it was just rebuilt but that obvously was not the problem. I also noticed that my tach meter is jumping all over the place. Anyone ever had this problem or know some test I can do to fix it?

I also replaced the spark plugs, wires and fuel filters. I dont really think the fuel filters would matter to much sense its carberated but they need to be changed. Anyways if anyone out there can give me some tips it would be awesome thanks

Probably a bad ignition module in the distributor. At this age I would just get a remanufactured distributor. Go ahead and get a new ignition coil while you're at it.

Have you tested the vacuum advance? Mine worked, but leaked so the PCM could not manage timing advancement reliably. Replaced the distributor and WhaLaa! all is good with the world now.

CPUNeck: the erratic tach needle points to something electrical, like the ig module, not vac advance, but the answer is the same: replace distributor.
