I just got back from a road trip from Texas back to Las vegas...1200 mile trip. My car was fine the entire way, never even over heated. Towards the end of my trip my car started to sound extremely loud. Kind of a grinding/vibration sound. It sometimes sounds almost like my front tires are rubbing against something. It only seemed to start making the noise once i hit 40mph...and kind of died down after hitting 75-80mph. I got to vegas and checked out the oil, water, tires..etc...my lower front control arm was loose a little bit so i thought that might have been the problem. but its still making the noise...could it be my wheel bearings...or maybe transmission...its not really a whining sounds, so i dont think it's my trq converter....it basically sounds like i have a huge exhaust...my check engine light is on, but i took it to autozone and they checked it and it was just for a loose gas cap....any ideas about what could be making my car sound like an evo? lol

You failed to mention how many miles are on the car.... This will sometimes help with a reply....
Wheel bearings tend to have a Repeating Crunch Crunch sound.... My first thought is to have the CV joints checked.... Does the noise seem to be more predominate when your going straight down the road or on turns????? Rich..... |

Front brakes metal on metal? Any worse when you brake? Wheel bearings going bad will kind of sound like a bowling ball rolling down the alley. The pulsing sound.
Like RichKing said could be a CV joint. Usually begins by sounding like a clicking or clunking when turning the wheel in parking lots and such. At it's worse point it will make noise all the time. Check to see if you have a splash guard or another housing rubbing on a moving part- axle, wheel, pulley, belt. Check that you don't have a spark plug loose. You mentioned it sounds like exhaust. Does it make the noise at all when the engine is just running or only while the vehicle is moving? I'm an old guy...what's an evo??? |
