you can go higher. your tires will usually say 44 psi max on them for passenger car tires although a few are up to 50. lower pressure gives a better ride and grip, higher pressure better handling. if the pressure is too high or too low it can cause excess wear. high pressure can decrease braking and inclement weather performance as well...however, the tire failure of Ford Explorers in the late 90's and early 2000's was caused largely by the fact that Ford recommended 26 psi in the tires and the tires really aren't designed to hold that much weight with that little help. having run a shop for a while, i feel that ALL cars should have at least 30 psi in the tires when used on the highway system (lower pressures can be a must in off roading situations and for drag tires) and 32-35 is a good compromise b/w handling and economy in most passenger vehicles.

Finding the exact tire pressure for your car and the way you drive with the load you carry will take time. You have to watch the way your tires wear (center tread wear means too high, outside tread wear too low). But three to ten pounds over recommended on door is not unusual. In no case exceed the pressure rating that is on the tire its self.
