Default check engine light turns on while driving and the engine didnt shut down

Hello, This is my first time posting a thread here and my knowledge of the internet is as hazy as my knowledge for cars. I was googling and it seems that people here know what they are talking about so here goes.

I was driving my 99 Honda Civic SIR a while ago when the check engine light turned on. The car still moved and I was able to go where I was supposed to go. I drove probably 500 meters with the light on. I parked and observed the car for a few minutes then I shut the engine off. After5 minutes or so I turned on the car again but this time the check engine light was off already and the car was functioning normally. I even drove around the parking lot to check wheter or not it would turn on again. I headed home at 5pm and it didnt bother me on my way.

I would also like to point out that Im having electrical problems. My battery has been discharged twice in three days so the guy in the battery shop told me something is wrong with my electrical. He said that there is ground somewhere. My car is parked outside, disconnected to the battery to avoid unwanted battery consumption.

Ive been reading previous posts and they refer to scenarios wherein the check engine light turned on and the car didnt run anymore. So i am under the impression that the cases in previous posts do not apply to me.

Do I still need to bring my car to Autozone or a mechanic even if the car is functioning well? Coz as much as possible I try to avoid spending nowadays. Would it also be sufficient if I have a mechanic fix my electrical problems.

Thank you very much. I hope you can help me with my problem.

You should go to Autozone etc. to read error codes after the light comes on again. The computer will store the codes even if the light goes out. Do it before you disconnect the battery again.

Here's how to find the battery drain:

Turn off the ignition and all light and accessories. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. Place a small 12V lamp or a current meter between the battery terminal and the battery post. The lamp will light brightly or the current will be above ~100 milliamps when there's a problem. Pull and replace fuses one at a time until the lamp goes dim (or the current meter drops). Then you'll know which circuit is causing the problem.

If you don't want to tackle this yourself find a knowledgeable mechanic who can do this. Don't just throw parts at the problem.

Thank you very much for your reply. I am actually planning to bring the car to the mechanic this weekend. I just do not know if he has the gadgets to read the codes.
