Yessss, dx hatches are some of the best cars. I can't speak for the a 96/97 model but i can for the 99/00 model since I have one and have tuned it. All hondas offer all kinds of aftermarket accesories and the factory motor is a good gas mileage motor. I said gas mileage not horsepower now lol since my stock 99 dx has less than 100 horse.

The best people would consider the 1992-1995 Civic HB OBD-1, light, and many aftermarket parts, but the bit heavily 1996-2000 are good, all the same 1996-1998 have a different front then 99-00. Research before you buy any parts here are some sites look around learn read read read.e-hatch.comhonda-tech.com

It is a very dependable car and cheap on gas. Parts are pricey because it's a Honda. I think there are better first cars that are more cost effective, but the Civic DX is going to be the cheapest on gas. How much money you need to tune it depends on how much tuning you want to do. Tuning can cost thousands of dollars if you want to go that far. In an old Civic, it would be a waste of money in my opinion.
