Default What is wrong with my Honda Civic '93?

It started about a year ago, I was driving to work one day and noticed that it wasnt really speeding up as fast when I pushed the gas pedal and the check engine light came on, so when I got to work I added oil, and the light went away. Then the next day it was worse, and so on for about a week, until it wouldnt even start. Its only under load, when its up on a lift and you accelerate, its fine, only when its on the ground does it do it. We replaced the distributer and the catalytic converter, and it didnt fix it. Also, it threw an O2 sensor code? But I read you can take those off, so we did and it didnt fix anything. Eventually we just bought a new car, and the Honda has been sitting in our driveway ever since, but now we are tempted to just buy a new engine to get the Honda up and running, since we are driving a Jeep Wranlger now and with gas prices the way they are and everything, its awful. So Im really wondering whats wrong with it, and should I just buy a new engine?I dont remember us replacing the fuel filter...my boyfriend is a mechanic so he was taking it into his shop for awhile and doing diagnostics, but I really dont remember him replacing the fuel filter..I'll suggest it.

Have you replaced the fuel filter?I used to have a '88 civic that had a similar problem. After changing the fuel filter and looking at the old one, there was so much gunk and dirt in it. It really made a huge difference once I put the new one in.

Don't buy an engine-I doubt very much it will fix it.Have a QUALIFIED Honda guy check it out (Honda diagnosis $75,engine replacemet $totaled).Very well be something as simple as fuel filter.

it could be the clutch wearing out. when its on the lift there is no pressure on the drive axles and it spins freely. when the clutch wears out your car will act like its losing speed and power, it causes the transmission to slip and not be able to transfer power to the wheels. with you not knowing that its the clutch, you probably over rev the engine until all the sensor went haywire causing the check engine light to come on.the feul filter is probably still fine. if the car is on the lift and in gear. step on the accelerator and let go of it, then step on it again. if the engine doesn't bog during the second acceleration attempt, then its not it. it is still fine.
