Default 1988 Honda Civic overheating?

There is no leak in the system. If I pull th radiator return hose, nothing comes out until the engine is quite warm. Then it alternates between a 1/4 inch stream and an occassional full 1 inch blast coming out. Only about 3/4 gallon total comes out of the system. I was going to pull the thrmostat, but people said it will mess up the computer system. Does that sound like the water pump? Any suggestions?

Thermostat won't mess with the computer, your car just won't go into open loop as it won't get up to operating temperature, in some cases, can cause overheating though as the coolant doesn't stay in the rad long enough to cool off.Try putting a new thermostat in, they're cheap and easy to replace.

Go to a RADIATOR SHOP and get it checked. I would suspect you have a plugged radiator. If you are pulling the top hose the coolant flow you have is about normal. The cooling system is a closed system and as soon as you lose a small amount of coolant with the hose off the water pump will stop pumping. The pump has no suction capability so cannot pull coolant from the block. It can only pump when coolant is supplied to it by a full system.

it could be the thermostat not opening up enough.and it doesnt affect your computer at all.but if the water pump is making noise, then thats it.
