Sounds like a loose wire or connection.

pull the radio out carefully and push all the plugs in fully. cant help with the ants though

With an older model car this isn't surprising. As a car ages, wires can become loose and when you hit a bump or it's a hot day these wires can separate. I can't imagine it wouldn't be too expensive to have someone pop out your radio and replace the wire. I would contact your local car stereo store and ask them. Hope this helps you.
