Default Help identifying this Honda Civic part please?

I found a part which appears to be broken within the ventilation ducts of the internal fan system of my Civic. It seems to be an element or thermostat of some sort - it looks like a huge version of a bulb filament, (ie several connected springs) and has electrical connections to it. I've not noticed anything working differently - I noticed it while cleaning the internal blower fan out. What is it and what does it do?Picture here if it helps

ditto - you will notice your fan does not work on one or two speed settings. These are resistive wires that drop the voltage to the fan to adjust what speed it runs at.
