Default Just bought a 99 Civic EX Coupe 5-Speed... How do I beef it up?

I've heard a lot about upgrades, but I'm a little lost. I've been raised on American Muscle (67 Mustang Fastback with a 427 Cobra Jet Engine) and I'm new to the whole "tuner scene" if you will... Don't take this as a diss on Honda's. I love my Civic. So please, no negative comments... I just want to beef up my 1.6 L 106 HP car. The more detail the better! What kind of spark plugs, what kind of exhaust will sound good without being "ricey"... etc. What size wheels can I get away with, and should I lower it? I'm not selling any time soon, so I don't mind putting in some money. However, I don't want to invest 10G in a 6G car. Doesn't make sense. Anyway, any and all help is appreciated! Thanks.

First start with short air intake and exhaust header pipes. Cheapy types work well too (make no difference). Don't go for the COLD air intakes. They are really designed for the tracks. They can suck up water and damage you engine. Also it is difficult to inspect and replace the air filters on many COLD air intakes. All short air intakes work about the same. It isn't the short air intakes that is well designed / engineered, but that the factory AIR BOX was really restrictive due to noise limitations. So even a cheap short intakes works as well as expensive stuff.Just make sure you do NOT get the metal intakes. They get hot and transfer the heat to the air. Plastic intake pipes gets hot too, but they do NOT transfer the heat as much. After you do that, get a feel for it and come back for more "advice".I got those 2 things on my 94 Civic Ex and it is good enough for me. When I stomp on the gas, this little mouse ROARS!!Good Luck...P.S. spark plugs make no difference in horse power. The platinum plugs just last longer (100k) but that's not a sexy selling point - so they say it increase HP.

Most cost efficient way is by adding an Intake (as stated), Exhaust Header and an Upgraded Cam gear. Upgrade your exhaust system as well. You can also upgrade your pulleys. If you're NOT planning an engine swap, these basic bolt ons will do.This is very general because with Civics there a soooo many brands out there.

Engine swap that single cam won't get you no where intake and exhaust won't do a thing... Find a B-series engine...99-00 Civic Si..94-01 Integra GSR or Type R unless you wanna get a LS and throw a vtec head on it.. But you looking at 800 to 3000 depending where you get the motor from....Spark plugs NGK exhaust look into buying a es muffler looks stock but sounds great and its alot better than a big fart can...look into a swap though...

apexi world series 2 cat-back. not ricey sounding. increases hp. ok i am gonna have to dissagree with the metal piping plastic piping crap that "lover not a fighter" said. yes they can suck up water if you are driving in a pool. and the metal piping has different coatings to stay cool notice the "COLD" in front of COLD air intake. so it stays COLD.
