I was told before by a mechanic that I should not change the transmission fluid in my car, because the mileage was so high. I have over 277K. But a tech at the oil change shop suggested I change it. I am not sure who to listen to. I am thinking the mechanic.

I was told you should change it every 30,000 miles or so by my mechanic. I just got a transmission oil flush not to long ago and my car runs a lot smoother. Its not neccassary to change all the time like an oil change, but it is important. Your car has a lot of miles so I would recommend getting one. Do you know the last time the car had one?

If you are at 277K miles and have the original transmission with the original transmission fluid DO NOT change it. Does this tech at the oil change shop work at Jiffy Lube and under the age of 20? He doesn't know what he is talking about. Listen to your mechanic! You should change your transmission fluid every 45K miles, but if you get over 100K miles and you have never done it, changing it will do more harm than good.People can give me thumbs down all they want and you can do what you like, but I guarantee you will mess up your car if you do it.

Of course. All oil wear out. There are 4 most important maintenance items in your engine and tranny (the most expensive parts of the car).(1) engine oil (3k - 5K miles)(2) tranny oil (30K miles)(3) coolant (3 years)(4) timing belt (60K miles)Just keep those maintenance and your engine and tranny will be problem free. I have a 94 Civic with 187K miles and the engine + tranny + suspension runs like new. I get 41 MPG (doing 72 MPH). I can get even better MPG doing 55.Good maintenance pays off.Good Luck...

thats the diffrence between technicians and mechanics and quicklube peeps... lol here at honda you only need to change MANUAL TRANS FLUID if there is a shift quality issue.... Now if its a AUTOMATIC you do need to change the fluid regularly with only HONDA ATF ONLY if the trans is slippin or acting up changing the fluid will not help honda also says not to flush with any kind of solvents or chemicals
