Carry your car to a local auto parts store as some will read the engine codes for you and tell you what they are. I know that they will do it at Advance and Autozone.

get an OBD 1 scanner. Don't get a 2 or II cause it won't work. should be able to find one at schucks for $40. If you have a laptop you can just get the cable and some software. www.auterra.com

well there is a little blue 2 pin connector under the dash area right below the glove box. It is usually kind of tucked into the harness very lightly. With the key off jump the 2 pins with a wire or paper clip and turn the key on. The check engine light will flash codes. short flashes are single digit codes and a long flash followed by short flashes is a 2 digit code\ex 1 long flash and 4 short ones is 14now on some of the lower trim models you have to pull the carpet up on the passenger side and there will be a little hole and a small red light in it cycle the key switch and then count the red light flashing in the same manner as the above examplegood luck and let me know if you have questions

ok i got good news for you.what if i told you auto zone has a lone a tool service. ok this is how it works, you give them $160 use the diagnostic machine they lend you for as long as you need it. NOW THIS IS THE COOL PART..... when you take it back you get all the money you put down on it back. it comes with an instruction manual, and its prity easy to figure out. trust me on this. its better to part with money for 1 day to fix something than not doing it at all. i promise you do get the money back no gimics!!!!!!!
