Default MIL is on; 2003 Pilot

I have a 2003 Pilot 119k miles. The MIL is on (symbol that looks like an engine). There are no DTC codes I can read with my aftermarket scan tool. I understand this is the emissions fault indicator. My shop manual makes some suggestions based symptoms like low power, hard starting, etc. But none of these apply. Someone said that I may have a proprietory code set that my scan tool can't read.

How can I tell what is causing the problem.

Go to an Autozone or someone else with a better scanner.
