Default temp fluctuation

i have a 1990 civic hatch. the car runs great until i start going up steep grades. the gauge quickly rise from 1/4-3/4 but not all the way to the red mark. it goes down just as quickly when i level out or start going downhill. i don't drive it hard. is this normal or do i have a problem? thanks for any help.

Get your cooling system pressure tested for a leaky head gasket.
