Default Is a 1988 Honda CRX Si worth buying? It has 166,000 miles on it and the guy is selling it for $700?

The body has some rust and rot at the rear wheel wells. If i buy this will i be able to source parts or will this whole idea of buying it in general turn into a money pit?

it will kinda be a money pit cause of the rust if you know what your doing on body work then no, but if you have to take it to the shop it will cost you some $ depends on how bad.. but $700 isnt a bad price ill buy it if you dont

$700 for a running car is a good deal in my opinion, there is not a whole lot out there in that price range. I had an old jeep that didn't even run that I sold to some guy for $800. He asked me about it after he helped me move in to my house. The thing was left behind with the house, the previous owner didn't want to move it and signed the title over to me when I closed, so he basically made my first mortgage payment, thank you very much. The new owner made the jeep into a rock crawling machine so everyone won.

It would really depend on how much rust and where, if the rust was on easily removed parts then I would do it, if it will have to go to a shop for removal then that's a tough one. I would rather get a crx that doesn't run with a good body vs a running crx with a poor body. Not that I am that into the looks of a vehicle but if it needs a new motor you could find one and install it for a reasonable price, then you've got a good looking and good running car. Repairing the rust or rot damage could cost the same as a motor but then you've still got a tired motor and compromised integrity of the body. That's a tough one because $700 for a running Si is a good price, and you might be kicking yourself if you didn't get it and at 166k you could expect 40k miles or more (depending on how it was treated). Ultimately I say if you only have $700 to spend and you need a car now... go for it, if you have a higher budget or have big plans for the car (like engine swap) then you might look elsewhere.

I just went thought this scenario. I bought an 88 CRX 2 years ago. I bought it because I love the cars and ignored the rust all around it. I ended up in a huge money pit as I found more and more rust the more parts I took off.Maybe yours is in better condition; take it to a mechanic and see what the floor, rocker panels and under body structure look like. If it is structurally sound then go for it. Cosmetic rust isn't a big deal - you can still drive around in a car that's cheap on gas and looks alright. But if there is any doubt then it's probably not worth it. Trust me on this one --- no matter how cheap the car is, rebuilding a car at the body shop is big bucks.
