Unhappy 98 Civic Hx Manual transmission problem

I have a 98 honda civic hx the 1.6 vtech-e with a manual transmission. The probem is 2nd gear. When i shift into second gear most the time it will miss or go in for a second then pop out every time it does this it grinds gears pretty bad. Also if it does make it in some times it will kind of snap a couple time but not always pop out of gear but if i take my foot off the gas it instantly goes out. A mechanic told me it was my manual detention rod and that i would need to buy a new trany. but i don't believe this because that only holds it in gear and that is not my only problem. Lately i have been putting it into gear kinda of hard then wiggling it in place and that seems to help. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
