Default What is up with the 2008 Honda Accord only getting between 21-31 mpg? It is a 4 cylinder.?

I thought it would get better gas mileage. Does anyone know what they realistically average?

Because the Honda Accord get fat over the years which I mean weigh. Before, it was classified as a compact car in the 70s and late 80s and then a Mid-size car in Early1990s as the Fourth generation Accord. The accord back then was really light and small and had only a 4 cylinder engine, and no 6 cylinder engine was available until the mid-90s. Today the accord went form a ford focus to a Buick Park Avenue which I mean in size. The accord today has more power, is more faster and has more technology which adds more weigh to the car and now is classified as Full-size car by the U.S. EPA). So that's why Honda Accord only gettings between 21-31 mpg Because it got heavy that's why. Hope this answers your question.

Being 4 cylinder doesn't mean automatically better economy. It's still a fair sized engine, displacement wise. I'd suggest you should check your driving habits. Any car will deliver better economy figures if driven in a quiet manner compared to "maximum acceleration, late braking, overreving" or any other driving habit you may have.

A honda accord is a full size car with a honda civic engine. if you want better fueal economy you can replace the intake, exhaust, and headers. you will have more power and better fuel economy. and dont run your ac all the time. that kills your gas mielage by 2.5 miles per gallon.

To jimmy's answer, the accord engine is 2.4 L where the civic is 1.8L ? which would make them not the same.

There are a few reasons. The Engine is alot bigger than a civic. More horsepower means less MPG. And it's a heavy car.

I think the new Accord is ugly. I liked the 80 to 90 ones. The new 4 cyl 6 spd Chevy Malibu looks better and get 32 mpg.
