I know how to drive a stick shift. im fine shifting up and everything. but like when i come to a stop sign or like when im just slowing down but not comin to a complete stop how do i pick up speed again. or how do i got about slowing the car down without stalling out. because i hate when like someones i front of me going slow and i have to slow down but then i start to feel the car jerk a little. almost as if im going to stall.

Down shift 1 gear, from the gear that you WERE in.*** pick-up speed by shifting up (when rolling) 1 gear.*** Car Jerk is not the guy behind you, just 'you' getting more comfortable with the {clutch/shifting} My idea is: 'driving is like dancing...doe-C-doe! Good Luck!

Easiest way and this is what I do is put it in neutral when you know you are coming to a stop or slowing down ( This is when you have enough time and room to do so). That way you know that you can stop or slow down without holding on the clutch as you are in gear just press the brake. As you need to pick up speed then shift as you need to and accelerate. You can also keep your foot on the clutch and brake then up shift to the right gear as you slow down ( I do this in slower traffic like bumper to bumper on streets or freeway ) but the other way would save more on the clutch. like the guy above said make sure not to ride the clutch.

When you make a complete stop, then you have to start over again as if you were driving off from your house. Picking up speed again after slowing down is not really hard. All you have to do is downshift to the right gear. Say you're on 4th, and you slowed down a bit and need to speed up, downshifting to the appropriate gear will be depend on how fast you are going (this is engine speed vs transmission speed). The lower gear you have at a higher speed, the higher the engine revs. It can either be 2nd or 3rd gear, but that depends on the car as well. What's going to happen if you downshifted to a gear that is too low and you're not driving slow enough for that gear, the car will jerk a bit as the transmission speed will try to match the engine speed. You don't really have to downshift to 1st gear unless you're coming really really really slow (like 5 mph) or you come from a complete stop. I suggest you to get clear feel of your car. In no time, you'll be downshifting easily and it will be just second nature to you.
