I know that I should be getting around 30 mpg. And i know some of it could be due to how you drive, but I don't think that is the only reason. I just had it checked at the dealership and they said the computer didn't say anything except it needed oil. They reset the system. Will that help?it is a 4 cylinder

In order to get your best mileage, you are going to need to stay in the highest gear all the time. As soon as you start moving, shift as quickly as your speed allows to the highest possible gear.Cruising around town all the time in second or third gear will provides more power on tap, but it will kill your mileage.Holding a constant speed with the lowest possible RPMs is how you improve mileage. hard accelerating, stop and go traffic, or pulsing the gas petal all impact mileage. Is your air filter clean? A really, seriously nasty air filter can really hurt mileage, but probably not to the tune of 10 mpg.

Check your:-Tires for proper inflation.-Intake Air Filter.-Spark Plugs.Other things might be: you're doing a lot more city driving so your always idling and then putting a load on the engine decreasing mileage, or if you have something really heavy in your car that causes the engine to work harder decreasing mileage, or you strapped on something outside the car decreasing it's aerodynamics thus decreasing mileage as well. Some of these won't drop your mileage to 17-20, especially if you have the 4 cylinder (rated 26city/34hwy). Now, if you have the 6 cylinder (rated 20city/30hwy), than that 17-20 mpg would definitely NOT be a surprise if any one of those things I mentioned gets worn out or unmaintained. I'm guessing you have the 6-cylinder.. so it's normal for 20mpg city. If you have the 4-cylinder...something is up with your car and the dealer won't fix it.. go to another one. Either that or you're just paranoid.
