Question 05 civic LX exhaust/muffler

Does a muffler on a stock exhaust system for a 5 speed manual transmission 2005 Civic LX serve any purpose whatsoever?
Or really, would it on any car?

OBVIOUSLY I don't know much about this kind of stuff, but basically (don't throw rocks at me please) I could care less about making the car faster because I don't really drive it like that, at least not often enough. But truthfully I'm sick of that boring old sound that it makes now. You know, the one where you hear absolutely nothing except maybe the engine revving every now and then when I get bored and want to do it.

Also, I can't stand the factory shift knob in that thing, what is the best place online you can order shift knobs?

Thanks---
