these are "model type" or "engine type" numbers. They refer to displacement, horsepower, block dimensions, etc.. The numbers you mention are Honda specific.

A B16 is a Honda Engine used in Honda/Acura cars, like the Civic Type-R. The "B" is the series of the engine, and the "16" is how many liters of displacement there are. So 16 = 1.6. 20 = 2.0 and so forth. So for example, if i had a B18C from an integra, you see the "B" is the series of the motor, and the 18 equals 1.8L. The C is the trim level of the engine. So combine that; B18C. Or if i had a K20 from an RSX-S. "K" is the new honda series, 20 is the liters. K20. An EE9 is a honda chassis code, like a DC2 is a DOHC VTEC integra, a DC4 is a non-VTEC integra, EK9 is a 96-00 civic etc. So an EE9 is the Honda Chassis code for a Civic 1.6L VTEC 150 90-91 You see it has a 1.6L VTEC, and a 91 so it has a VTEC B16 motor.
