Default Bad fuel mileage on 02 honda civic lx?

Just purchased it used, and I've been getting 30 miles to the gallon on highway when its supposed to do 38... I've been driving for a 2 weeks now...still hasn't changed... i've changed my air filters, changed my gas, wheels aligned... nothing... Whats wrong?

What is your average speed on the highway? And how do you drive in town? Jack rabbit starts? Are you using the brakes a lot?

38 is an ESTIMATE...actual mileage differs from whats printed...due to gas, the way you drive, the tires on the car (new or incorrect pressure).you have to make your own estimate on gas to know what your car truly gets...If you don't like the gas mileage on a certain car, why did you buy it ???

Have you ever been able to test drive a car for an entire tank of gas, so that you could get the mpg?

First, I don't know of any current information that would predict 38 MPG. That may have been what was on the new car sticker, but the EPA has acknowledged they overestimated mileage in years past. The current EPA estimate is 34 MPG.http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/calcu...d=17553Second, as the first answer indicated, any published MPG figure is an estimate. Your driving habits, any modifications made to the card, past maintenance, and the amount of weight in the car all have an impact. I have found one of the biggest factors is speed. At 75 MPH I will be well below the EPA highway estimate. At 55 MPH I will be above it.
