Default 1999 Hona Accord - engine stalls when slowed down?

My 99 Honda Accord engine stalls/dies when I slow down the car or when the car is idle at traffic lights. Doesn't always happen, but happens with sufficient regularity these days to get me worried. When the engine stalls, it does not come up immediately, and it stays stalled for 2-3 mins before its again normal (which becomes a real pain as I can't get the car off the road as it cant go into Neutral from Parking when the engine is not ON)

Exclamation Re: 1999 Hona Accord - engine stalls when slowed down?

Soooooooo, we have a 1999 Honda Accord EX 2.3L ULEV-VTEC and have been having the same problems. Two Honda dealers couldn't figure it out, our normal mechanic couldn't figure it out at first. Then the car died again last week in the middle of a side road not far from my mechanic. He came out and we tried starting it again. There was no spark, no fuel. Verrrrrrrry bizarre. On a hunch, we shook all the relays and tried again. Still nothing happened. Then we peeled back the upholstery on the passenger side front floor and tapped on what we thought was the ECM (it's hard to see anything in there). Sure enough, the car started and ran fine for 5 minutes up the road. It died again and we repeated the procedure so we could get it back to the garage. We pulled the electrical schematics and diagrams. We found something very interesting. We were not tapping on the ECM, it was in fact the SRS Module. The SRS module is connected to an immobilizer which is also connected to the main relay and the ECM. The SRS unit is faulty and is sending the signal to the Immobilizer that the car is in an accident and needs to shut down the fuel system to prevent fire etc. Oh, before I forget, there never were any codes or anything to indicate this was the problem, we had to do trial and error, which can prove costly. I still can't believe Honda didn't have a clue, it seems to be quite a common problem from what I have seen on-line in different forums and what not. Strangely enough though, this is what has been reaking havoc on our lives the past month. So we ordered the part for $75.00, used, from Ohio and are having it installed on Tuesday. The part sells for $145.00, new, on-line at Honda Parts at Honda Accessory, Honda Car Parts, Honda Auto Parts, Honda Accord Parts.

We also had the exhaust problem and had to replace the catalytic converter and BOTH O2 sensors. When you replace one, you should replace the other. The lead sensor (upstream) tells the ECM how rich or lean the car is burning, therefore, it is the most important. Ours went dead so we went through a cat.

Best of luck.

Cool Re: 1999 Hona Accord - engine stalls when slowed down?

I have a 1999 Honda Accord EX V-6 and am having the same problem of the engine shutting down all of a sudden - primarily when stopped, but also when traveling at 70 mph.

I am able to restart the car after approximately 10 minutes - a real pain. Particularly today when it was locked up in park at a location protruding into 60 mph traffic!

I have suspected the problem to be something electrical, but did not have a clue as to what it could be. The SRS system as you describe make the most sense of anything I have read.

Did the SRS replacement solve the problem?

You happened to have caught me as I was signing off. The problem has been resolved. It turns out that the code was sending us on a wild goose chase. The true problem was the distributor. I ended up replacing the entire unit and it never did it again. I went to a junk yard and purchased a used one for $75.00 and installed it. Everything has been fine ever since. It apparently is a huge problem with Honda. I had the distributor replaced a year before and of course the warranty on the part had just expired. Try to stick to factory parts, much better off that way. The SRS unit was acting up because of the fact that everything else was off. I replaced that with a salvaged part too. Try that. I guarantee you will be having no more problems of the sort. Have a great night and a wonderful holiday! I hope this is of use to you.
