Possibly new valve cover gasket but compression rings wouldn't cause this.

You have to find out where the leak is coming from first of all. The only way to do this if the engine is already covered in oil is to clean/degrease the engine. Once you have done that, run/drive the vehicle for a few minutes or hours ( however long it takes ) for the leak to reappear and then proceed with the repair at that point.

dink is right. to tell if it is leaking (more likely spraying) you should power spray your engine. if you get oil all over after that, you know that it is leaking.

Just sit in your car and start the engine, press the fuel pedal 5 to 6 times to the 3000 rpm or 4000 rpm and watch at the back exaust, it there is Blue Color Smoke then You have Overhull the engine change the piston rings, bearings, gasket and piston some times AND if there was no any blue color smoke then don't worry just buy 2 litter of Diesel and Wash all the engine with it, then after 30 minutes wash it again with water and let it dry completely. Now you can start you Engine and warm it and check for any leakage at the head gasket, crancase gasket and the main pulley oil seal, just replace the part from where the oil is leak.Tip: when you press the Fuel pedal upto 3000 rpm or 4000 rpm, If there was any White Smoke ro Black Smoke don't worry, The White smoke is just water inside your exaust system and the Black smoke is rich mixture of fuel. Just worry if you found any blue color smoke.

All those answers I agree with. However I do not recommend cleaning your engine with diesel. I found the best way is to take my car to a do-it-yourself carwash and pressure spray the thing really well. Just make sure you don't get water inside the distributor (the thing with all the spark plug wires coming out of it)Your oil leak could be coming from a number of different locations. It is very difficult to know until you have cleaned the engine very well and drove it long enough for it to show itself again. The leak could be coming from the valve cover, oil pan, oil sending unit, front main seal, rear main seal, oil pump seal, dipstick tube o-ring, distributor o-rings, and there are more I am sure I am missing.Like dink2925 said, "compression rings wouldn't cause" an external oil leek that you will see all over your engine. However if you want to your engines compression you really need to do a compression test on it. Blue smoke coming out of the tell pipe is a very good test and will not tell you exactly what is happening and how bad the problem is. A properly performed compression test will. I also recommend a leak down test as well. Both these tests can be performed yourself with the right tools. You can by these tools at any auto parts store.I recommend having a trusted professional do it, as they will know how to properly interpret the test results. The test results will pinpoint the problem to being:•Bad/worn compression rings on the pistons•Blown head gasket•Burnt/leaky intake/exhaust valves in the cylinder head•Worn cam lobe(s) or incorrect cam timingBut if you want to give to do a little homework and buy the tools here is a great how-to do-it-yourself page on how to do and interpret a compression tests. http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/comp.htmBlue smoke could also indicate a problem with worn valve guides/seals. You can test this by starting the car after it has been sitting over night. Check to see if blue smoke comes from the exhaust during the very first 30 seconds. This is a good indication that you have worn valve guides/seals. This problem can require your cylinder head to need rebuilt depending on the way it is made. Also note that a compression test and leek down test cannot test for this problem.

its not your rings. If you clean it off and it is leaking at the valve cover replace the valve cover gasket. If it is leaking where the head meets the block its your head gasket. Does your car overheat at all. If so its the head gasket. I would check to see if the head is good though. You might have cracked it if it is overheating.

compression rings.. piston rings. if your rings are bad you will smoke. blue is oil.. meaning a rebuild might be needed. black is unburned fuel.. somethings not running right. white is coolant.. head gasket. who ever said ignore white smoke is an idiot lol. oil just on your engine is a leak. you need to clean it and drive it to find out where the leak is coming from.
