Default My transmission on my 1998 Honda Civic..?

What should i do? i just went for a diagnostic check at this mechanic shop.. It says my transmission needed to be checked out.. Its an automatic car... Should i trhow the extra money out to change it from Automatic to Manual??..and get like a brand new transmission.. Lets say like at meineke... You think that could work? do they even have manual tranmissions?? and how much do you think it will run me?.... ITs a 1998 HOnda Civix LX.. I like the whole outlook of the car.. and it looks nice.. So i don't mind fixing it up.. espeically the transmission... Help me!! please, and thank you for all that you do..

You can buy a new one from an auto parts store for $1500 or you could have the old one rebuilt for a quarter of that price. It should take a few days to a week for someone to rebuild it for you.

trannies marry to the engine...if you don't have the correct engine in the first place, you can't get a std tranny. So you have to swap out BOTH the engine and the tranny if you want a std...it will cost more than the car is worth. If you need a new tranny, then you've overworked the one you have. Honda trannies do not go bad on their own, they have lots of help. ( you been shifting an auto ??? they aren't made to do that...)If you want a std tranny car, BUY one...don't get an auto and expect it to work like a std and then when it goes bad to get a std to swap. It doesn't work like that...Get the tranny that GOES with the car, the auto. (you'll be saving yourself a lot of time, trouble and money...and don't distroy this one.)

Can i give you a piece of advice, you said in your question that the mechanic said have it checked out. That means you should have a professional look a the trans. That does not necessarily mean that you have a problem. I have seen several times on that model, broken wires on certain sensors that the only thing it takes to find the problem is a little bit of troubleshooting. Before you think about going through all the trouble of swapping to a 5 speed, at least find out what is wrong with the trans. If you decide to swap it over it is a whole lot easier to go from an auto to a 5speed than vice/versaThe biggest thing is eliminating the extra wires and you will prob have to change the pcmHope this helps!

I would have it checked out by a real transmission shop first to see if you need to replace it. If so, I think the best thing to do especially for a car 10 yrs old is to replace it with a used trans. You can get a good low mileage warrantied trans for as low as $300. A good shop should charge around $400 if not cheaper. Changing it from Auto to Manual is sort of like downgrading it. It will not be worth as much if you try to sell or trade it. If you plan to keep it for a while longer obviously it wouldn't matter but it will still run hundreds of $ to make the change. Always start with the small things first before assuming the worse.

Default Re: My transmission on my 1998 Honda Civic..?

I have the same issue with the automatic transmission of my 98 Honda Civic. It has 140k. Now the gears are getting stuck and I have to give more gas to have it move forward. It happens more when I am driving on an uphill road. Should I get it replaced and where do i get the re-built trans for $300 and what would be typical labor cost to get it re-built?.
