1) I'm going on a trip. 200 miles. On highways (though not interstates). In a straight line for the most part. For more than 60 miles, it is telling me to turn around and take a certain highway. It just insists on sending me a very out-of-the-way way. I have it set on 'most direct route'. I happen to know where I'm going but put in the destination just to see what it would want me to do. It is lost. Good thing I am not.2) Searching for business by name. Wal-Mart. How many Walmarts are in 20 miles of me? At least 15. It picks one in Nebraska. (I'm on the East Coast). ? ----------- Any experience with this? It is a factory nav system. Don't tell me it is operator error or insult me. I'm immune to that. I just want to hear from someone helpful and/or fun on this subject.

The maps probably need to be updated. I would never buy a any car with a built in Navigation System because there's bound to be problems, I rather spend 200-300 bucks and get a separate one that way I could remove it easily and take it where ever I go.

Navigation systems are only as dumb as programmers leave them to be. So they are only as smart as the logic and information available for them to work with. The task of developing artificial intelligence to find the best way from point A to B can be very challenging. Every highway, street, or significant segment on a map must be evaluated and associated with a property value for the distance and a weighting factor. The value for determining distance can easily be provided by GPS but choosing the right weighting factor is prone to error. It can vary based on the number of lanes on the street, the usual traffic, and opinionated observations. If the weighting factor is incorrectly identified, someone who's truly familiar with a better route can recognize this flaw when a navigation system chooses a path that makes no sense. If your navigation system knows there are Wal-Marts 20 miles of you and yet chooses one in Nebraska, there's a good chance that you've discovered a bug or incorrect values in it's database. Unfortunately, programs including navigations systems can't always be perfect and can slip by the quality assurance team especially if it's bad database record entries.Hope this helps
