The air filter does just that...filters the dirt and dust out of the air that the engine uses! Any dirt drawn into the engine causes extra friction, and wear! Put it back on so as to not ruin the engine!!! A good clean filter should make very little difference in the amount of air flow going into the engine...as to improved performance...that is likely just your thinking, unless the old filter was very dirty and plugged!

get a high efficiency air filter. k and n is good look at airraid or other types of cold air intakes since cooler air is more dense and will give you better combustion properties.if you are good with your hands, you can probably fabricate a air intake that is closer to the front of your car behind the grill. when you are moving forward, the extra air pressure will allow your engine to breath much better.just fab an intake hose to your filter box and route it towards the front of the car. a large funnel type intake will give you a couple extra psi in the untake.

yea, not too good to do, but if you didn't do it for a long time its fine. look into a cold air intake, then you always will have a nice sound when you hit the gas, probably better then the stock air box with the filter out.good luck

It's not a good idea, because all the junk that gets caught by the filter gets sucked into the motor. That includes leaves, bugs, dust, dirt, water, cigarette butts, trash, whatever you dump out of the air cleaner when you change the filter. However, it won't destroy your engine, at least not right away. Eventually the increased dust and dirt can damage the cylinders and valves. Depending on the car, it is possible to flip the air cleaner lid over and get the throaty sound you are looking for, and increase the power a bit, but frankly, this is only a possibility on big motors with round air filters. There are many race motors that run with no air filters, such as dragsters, funny cars, drag boats, etcetera, but they are designed to be run at full speed for short durations and rebuilt after almost every race.
