The 1997 DX Coupe came with power steering if you have an automatic transmission. If you have a manual transmission it came with manual steering.power steering was standard on the EX and HX model Civics in 1997 in the US.In Canada power steering was on the Si and all DX models regardless of transmission.the easy way to tell is if you have power steering the power steering pump reservoir will be a white plastic container similar in size to a can of beans near the front driver's side of the engine compartment. It will have a red cap on it about the size of a quarterit would cost about the value of the car to convert it to power steering as you have to install a new power steering pump, rack and pinion steering assembly, pullys and drive belts. If the car is hard to turn, try putting more air in the tires as that will decrease turning resistance.Hope that helps
