The 2009 toyota Matrix, and the Honda Fit are nice little cars. Both have fold flat rear seats in 60/40 configuration, and boast a lot of cargo space. However, the Fit is slightly smaller. To be fair, the Fit has to be compared to the standard model Matrix. Both the S, and XRS have a more powerful engine(2.4L). If you want sports car handling, the Fit is going to prove slow. Both versions of the Fit are equipped with a 1.5 liter engine, and the Standard Matrix has a 1.8 liter. Overall, the Fit is a smaller car. But it trys to make up for it by its versitlity for cargo. The back seat can be lifted and and a mountain bike can stand behind the front seats. Also the front passenger seat folds back flat. The Matrix front passenger seat folds flat forward, and creates a bit of a rise in the long cargo mode. The Fit comes with 14" wheels and 15" alloy wheels, and the Matrix starts out at 16" and has 17" optional alloys. The Fit, and the standard Matrix are both fitted with front disc, and rear drum brakes. Safety features are well matched across the board. The Fit Sport will give you more features than the Standard Matrix dollar for dollar. As a third car for comparison, consider the Scion Xd.Now, if you step up to the Matrix S version the comparison begins to fail. The Fit sport is still be ahead on options, such as cruise control and other cosmetic options. However, the more powerful engine in the Matrix S forces the comparison to something more like the Mazda Speed 3, or the Suburu Impreza. The matrix S, and XRS are different animals. If pricing is driving your purchase, the Fit or Fit sport will win.If cargo capacites the Matrix is larger. If sport driving is a consideration, the 2009 Matrix S and XRS will bury the Fit.
