As it says in the title i have a 1998 Honda Civic. It has 111k miles on it and lately i have been having problems with reversing. About one - two seconds after i switch to reverse, it makes a horrible grinding sound. If you could help me at all, leave a message.

Check the transmissison fluid level per the owners manual. If that is ok, get to a trusted transmission dealer/shop and get a diagnosis. Might be something simple. If you keep driving it, you may do doing more damage to the transmission. There are also transmission additives you can buy at auto parts stores. There are many different ones outthere. One is by Lucas company. Ask the employee at the parts store. Some of those folks are very knowledgeable.

so you know , i would say around 70% of all aged civics having difficulty getting into reverse, honda did not synchronize reverse , what this means is because honda never intended on us shifting into reverse at any type of speed a synchro was unneeded -------the job of a sychonizer (part inside of tranny) is to bring the shafts inside the trans to around the same speed to avoid gear clash, honestly just by knowing honda's nature i would deal with it until it is unbearable and then you may have to get it fixed, nothing you add to the tranmission such as fluids, additives are going to heal metal components in the trans , they just cushion/mask what is actually at fault, you cheapest bet for repair would probably be to have a junkyard tranny put in considering how plentiful hondas are, because if you have it rebuilt it would probably cost around 1000+ -------------good luck
