Default clattering sound when cold, only when in gear?

Lately I've noticed a sound coming from my motor/tranny. It sounds almost like the clatter of a diesel engine or like a motor that's knocking, but it's only when it's really cold and I first start driving and it's only when the car is in gear. It's not my motor, cause I revved it up in neutral and it doesn't make the noise. But when I'm in gear and giving it gas, it makes the noise. Also, it's become harder to put it in 5th while it's cold too.Any ideas?(d15b7 w/manual trans) (95 civic hatch)Accordhelp, I don't think it's an issue with my head components if the noise only occurs with the transmission in gear. I pressed the gas pedal while in neutral to simulate driving and the noise was not there. It is only while actually driving the car with it in any gear that this noise occurs. I really only hear it after 2300 rpms or so and it get progressively louder up to around 2800-3000 rpms where I shift. It does this in each gear. But I even revved it up while rolling at 40 mph and the noise was absent, then as soon as I put it back in 4th gear,it was back. The noise completely clears up after the first 3 or 4 minuites. Everyone is telling me it's a throw out bearing. I think that's what I'll believe. I even asked on hondaforums.com (awesome website). New question, how long until this noise progresses into a real problem like my clutch failing or something? I drive about 20 miles per day or so.

I have owned only Honda's since my first car (89 civic) and there are some things that are just normal, as the car gets older this "clattering" sound as you describe it, if it is the one I am thinking of is very normal, does the sound slowly go away as it gets warm? If so it is this normal Honda sound, going into fifth gear though, does this get easier as you drive it? If not, I would get my clutch checked, as this would be your main culprit for that. Hope this helps. . happy Honda'ing.

it sound like throw out bearing is worn out if so you should think about changing complete clutch and bearing

sounds like valve clatter,no big deal really, may need a vave adjustment(not sure if the vave train on these are adjustable)as far as your hard shifting, try lubricating your shift linkage and the shift ball under the stck shift boot with a good penetrating oil and then some lubricant.if this does not help you may have throw out bearing or other clutch issues, maybe pressure plateedit,Forgot to mention my 1996 V/6 Accord valves started clattering at 140,000 miles,it now has 296,000 and I haven't done anything to fix them, just oil changes.

Hi, The clattering noise you describe is the valves. These honda engines do not have hydrylolic valves like many other cars, therefore they do need adjustment every once in a while, but if it only does it when it's cold I wouldn't worry about until the noise stays consistantly. If it's bothering you have the valves adjusted, it's around $130 at a honda dealer, maybe cheaper elsewhere. The 5th gear problem is probably just because the transmission fluid is old. When it's cold out the fluid is much thicker which makes it shift harder. You can easily change the fluid. There's two drain plugs on the bottom of your trans. The lower is the drain plug, the upper is the fill plug. drain it, put the lower plug back in, and fill it until it overflows. I believe them take 10W-30, but check the owners manual to be positive. Hope this helps.
