Is it the light on the dash? If so check the E-brake to make sure it not pressed on If it's the rear lights check the stoplight switch.

It could be an indicator light lettign you know that one of your brake lights has gone out. Have a friend sit behind your car when you hit the brakes to make sure they are all working. Often times the middle light above the trunk goes out first.

It's warning you that the brake fluid is low in the master cylinder reservoir. Top it up but make sure to have the brakes looked at. When the fluid gets low it usually is a good sign that the pads are almost worn out.

You could have a bad Brake switch. When this goes bad it will throw on your brake lights. Also you may notice that down the road you will see probs with taking your car out of park into gear. The switch tells the selenoid near the shifter to allow you to pull from park to gear when you step on the brake.
