My 1998 honda civic makes a loud squealing noise that gets worse the longer the car runs. I have isolated the noise to the front left area of the engine where the belts and the power steering pump is located. Freind of mine had me turn the wheel all the way over and when it hits the stop it makes a even louder high pitched noise, he recomended it has to do with the power steering pump but i still think it might be one of the belts. It has had this issue since last year and has been only geting louder since then. What do you guys think?

You need a new belt.

Whenever I've had "belt problems, before I go to the shop I always spray the area with Wd-40, to see if that stops it. In your case I'd also check the fluid in the power steering

it may be as simple as tightening the belt or belts. replacement of the belts, if necessary, is not too costly.

It is possible your belts are dry. Try lubricating them with a bar of soap..Rub the soap briskly over the inside of the belts.***Caution Be sure the Engine is turned off before doing this***

Read owners manual if you have one, if not, check fluid level, if it is low have lines checked for leaks. manual will tell you the correct type of fluid to use or ask dealer, slipping belt will also make a squealing noise, use belt dressing on inside of belt. Usually if it is the belt it will get louder when you pat the gas more in neutral.

there is a belt that runs the power steering pump if it is just the belt than thats what one it whould be. but if not it could be the pump its self or it can just be low on power steering fluid

I would try to tighten the powerstreering belt and that should fix it

It could be either the belt or your power steering pump itself going out. Start by replacing the belt, as it is the easier fix. If the sound continues, replace the power steering pump.
