Default 91 honda civic dx?

Well, let me tell you a bit about my car, when I bought it, it ran perfectly, but a few weeks later I checked the muffler and it had a hole about 8 by 8 inches wide and long. The car ran perfectly so I didn't think anything of it, and just recently, I was driving it down the interstate, and all of a sudden it seems like it lost a lot of power and it starts off really slow at a stop. There are black fumes coming from the car where the muffler is, but it never had that problem, even when it had the hole in the muffler until just now. I thought it would be the fuel filter due to the loss of power and takeoff. I changed the fuel filter and when I dumped the gas from the old fuel filter it was a real dirty brow color. When I installed the new fuel filter, the car seemed to be running better, but still has that slow takeoff problem. What I also forgot to mention was that the car starts to shake a lot in park and I feel it shaking underneath the car. Please help and thank youthe temperature and oil are fine, the car just shakes a lot and there is a lot of smoke coming from the mufflerI'm pretty sure its not the catalytic converter, the muffler is the one in the back and that is the thing that has the hole in it, but i may be wrong.

Did you change the timing belt which is recommended at about 60,000 miles? Honda engines last forever if they are correctly maintained as per the manufacturer guidelines, otherwise they can easily go up in smoke..

You definitely need a new muffler. This helps silence the banging of the pistons in the engine by filtering the exhaust gas through the muffler. Since the car is an older model you may have other damages in your exhaust system or catalytic converter. Go see a mechanic right away.

It could be internal, like bearrings, valves, pistons. If your temperature is ok then it wouldn't be headgasket, check the oil to see if it is mixed and that would tell you. But you are talking about a 91 Civic, they are good cars and sound but they can only last so long.

I own a 91 civic dx and i had to buy a new muffler for it. it too had a huge hole in it and replacing it took away the loud noise. but i think your problem is the catalytic converter, you may think I'm wrong and that's fine, but catalytic converters can plug up and that sounds like your problem....really black smoke, loss of power, no acceleration, that's what will happen if something is plugged and you cannot get any performance out of it. i would take it to a muffler shop and see what they say...also you can take it to schucks or some place similar and have a diagnostics test done on it for free, that too will tell you if it is your catalytic converter or not....just a thought
