My husband has an automatic 2002, 2-door Honda accord V6. The check engine light came on about a week ago, and the 4th gear light was blinking. The car drives fine. However, we took it into the dealer today and they told us it would cost $2900 to rebuild the transmission. It has 58,000 miles and I don't think we have an extended warranty. Is this estimate accurate or should we get a second opinion? Also, will continued driving making it worse?

Get a second opinion and a third. I am wondering if the sensor is malfunctioning. If it drives well, feels smooth and isn't making any unusual noises, it's probably the sensor but get more opinions. It would also be a really good idea to find a mechanic you can trust. I deal with a garage that hires only Honda trained mechanics who have taught me that they are trustworthy. That said, when you get it checked, ask to see the results of the computer check. If they don't let you see them, then they might be hiding something. Am I a pessimist when it comes to dealing with mechanics - hell ya, have had to struggle with blatant liars in that trade.

get me the code and I can tell you if it is just a sensor. We see this alot at our shop.

ps that is pretty reasonable, and don't let a transmission shop rebuild it. Honda puts a factory rebuilt unit with 3/36 warranty. we are usually a few hundred less for that job with the same part.

I think Danny is offering you good advice. Honda always guarantees their work so you can't go wrong by following the advice that he has offered.
