Default My 1998 Honda Civic is making a ticking noise when it runs and sometimes it starts and...

...sometimes it doesnt.? it has 110, 000 miles on it and the timing belt hasn't been changed, the battery and starter do work. it only starts when the throttle it pushed all the way down. i have heard that it could be the valves offsetting the pistons, and the rods but i'm not sure and i need help. if this is the case am i better off getting a new motor or should i just replace everything?

First take it somewhere that you can trust, and get their expert opinion. I've taken cars I've had before to many places that wanted to revamp everything and charge me a whole lot, when in most cases u just need minor maintenance. Ask around for a trustworthy shop.

You’re up for a valve adjustment, I’d bet that’s what’s causing the ticking sound. I however would recommend you take care of timing belt first, the valve adjustment can wait! If the timing belt snaps you’ll need a new engine!

you just need a valve lash adjustment, thet ticking nosie is common after so many mile, (the valves are hitting the pistons). If the nosie gets louder its getter worse. Worse case is that the valve drops into the piston and damages the motor. get someone to tighten up thoses valves.

Maybe people's perception is that Hondas last forever, but that's far from reality. Any car can last 300,000 as long as you keep funneling money into the thing. Is that a wise thing to do? The smartest thing you can do is dump the Honda.

I'm assuming that you have a CX,DX, or LX model. Get those valves adjusted and definitelty get that timing belt changed ASAP!! These are good cars if you keep up with the scheduled maintenance. That tapping are the valves. They need to be adjusted. If you have an EX or HX, those have a VTEC head so the valves are self-adjusting. If you own one of those, your problem could just be a timing belt going bad. No matter which one you have, get that timing belt replaced or you will be replacing your engine if it breaks. 110,000 miles is nothing on a Civic engine so it should last you at least last you to 300,000 miles wih proper maintenance.
