as fair as safety goes their is no safety because Honda's and mostly all small cars from that time were death traps. they are maid from very thin metal and have very little structural support in the unit body. not to mention that the roof and doors have nothing more than a thin metal beam running the length of the doors and the roof. What good does an air bag do if the dash Bord caves in on you and breaks your legs?. and god help you if you were to get broad sided or rear ended. As far as problems look for body rot most Japanese cars from this time period have cheep metal that can and will rot. look under the car for roted suspension mounts roted floor bords ex. Make shore you wear gloves and feel behind the wheel wells for roted metal. Mechanically these cars are pretty good they have no power but they are great on gas.

i agree with corey B, just make sure the timing belt, radiator are in good shape. make sure the car is a clean title and not a salvage title. a properly maintained civic can run up to 200k or more with no problem, its reliable safe plus cheap to insure

These 5th generation Honda Civics are very reliable and easy to work on. make sure you service the timing belt and water pump every 60K and it will last over 200K miles. Biggest problem with these car is Muffler falling out every 2 years. When it falls out the first time, get a good quality after market muffler. Don't go to cheap discount muffler shop.As for safety, they are not safe and if you crash one, it did poor on crash test. So I would go with 6th generation Honda Civic instead (1996 - 2000) The timing belt and water pump rule applies, it should be the first thing you should replace when you get a used car.
