EDIT: Went back and researched it later because I was curious and it turned out my mental image of how an automatic transmission worked is wrong. There is no clutch in it so it can't be that. More research may be prove me wrong but I still think that the problem would probably be in the connection between the engine and the transmission, in this case the torque converter. I would presume that a good mechanic could replace that without having to replace the whole transmission. Still check to see if that's the problem before you buy the car. It could be that the whole transmission is dying and thats going to be a LOT of money to replace.I'm not an expert in practical auto mechanics and I don't know much about how an Automatic tranny works but that sounds like it could just be the clutch slipping which would be substantially cheaper to fix than a getting a whole new transmission.

Does the transmission have enough fluid in it? It should be clean and red. If it looks or smells burned, the transmission is probably finished. The Accord is a very popular car, so you could probably get a used transmission from a wrecked car and have it swapped in. I don't know how much it would cost but probably no more than 1500 total. A 2000 accord that you have only around $3000 invested in, with a newer transmission still sounds like a pretty good deal if the rest of the car is in good shape.

you will likely be able to fix the existing transmission, however it is an expensive repair to remove and recondition a transmission. also, a 2000 model year vehicle with transmission problems has been abused and/or neglected. I recommend not purchasing that specific vehicle. look for another example

I had 2000 accord lx,and at 112k miles .the tranny went out ...Honda Corp. of America helped me out with the tranny ( I was over the warranty with few 11`s miles) which was around $2000,and I paid the lapor which was $1125.....so I think if you are willing to pay few $$ go ,and get the car it is a great car,and trust me nothing like honda .......

You are looking at about 10 hours of labor to drop the transmission and reinstall. If transmission is bad, you will need to buy a rebuilt transmission. Cost of the repair will run you between $1500 - $3000 (depends on quality of transmission to get)
