Default I have a 96 Honda Accord LX. My engine light just came on.What would be some causes of that?

It has had regular maintenance and have never had any problems with sounds, smells or any leakages

their are many causes but one main one is a bulb or a fuse is overflowed, needs a new battery, or loil pressure.

Drive over to AutoZone and they will run a free diagnostic check for you. The code that shows on their diagnostic machine will tell you why the error occurred, and what might be the cause. Sometimes the cause is simple like leaving off the gas cap, or a slight fault with an oxygen sensor. If you have no mechanical experience, you could ask a garage to fix a problem that, otherwise, might just be fixable at home. Ask them to clear the fault code for you; otherwise you will have to wait for 40 engine starts to clear the check engine-light.Good luck and drive safe... Dr Antony

its possible that your gas cap not longer seals correctly. that would allow the check engine light to come on. but as everyone will say it could be a number of things just make sure that you tighten the gas cap until it clicks

There is a switch that sometimes goes out that is connected to the engine. Take it to your local Honda dealer, explain your problem and they can fix it. If it is the switch, it's not very expensive. But don't wait, it could be serious.

96' Honda Accord has an OBD warranty extension from Honda. Your local dealer will diagnosis the Malfunction Indicator Lamp at no charge and make any related repairs at no charge for 14 years or 150,000 miles. If you have between 75,000-150,000 miles you will even get a free OBD tune up which includes oil change, spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap/rotor.I have replaced transmissions at no charge to the customer just because of this light numerous times...
