what's the problem? I take really good car of my car. I take my car in for regular maintenance according to the car manual that came with the car. No accidents (knock on wood). Frequent oil changes. In July I pulled into my carport and applied the brake and the engine just died. I turned the engine over and was got the car started again. Earlier today I applied the brake in a parking lot and the engine died again. I was able to start the car again thankfully. Any suggestions would be helpful...do you think it might be a problem with the distributor cap, transmission, etc?

From the information that you have given, it seems the brake application is the connection to the engine cutting off. Could it be electrical? Maybe applying the brake sets it off. Are there other conditions when your engine has cutt off, like running the air, wipers, etc.?

Sounds like the transmission to me...maybe it's not allowing the car to idle at a stop, and causing the engine to stall instead. Isn't that the torque converter's job? I have always driven manuals, so my knowledge is limited on the inner workings of autos. I'd take it to a local mechanic and get it diagnosed..then you can decide what to do. Good luck!

An engine dying like that typically should bring your Engine Light to come on. Can you tell if your Engine Light on your dashboard is lit? If so, you'll need to buy/borrow an OBD 2 (On-board diagnostic) scanner from your local auto store to check what the computer in your auto is telling you. Your car is filled with dozens of sensors that communicate with your car's computer. In most cases, your car can give you an idea of where the problem lies. Also, be careful with the autoshops you take your car to for oil changes and repairs. If you're not familiar with doing them yourself and cannot see what they're actually doing, it would be easy for dishonest mechanics to sabatoge your car so they can get you to pay for unnecessary repairs done and make things worst.
