Check your fuse underneath the dash. 9 times out of 10 it's the taillight fuse. Your istrument cluster lights go out to let you know that the taillights aren't working. Once the taillights start working again, the dashlights will too.

As a warranty claims adjuster, I get a call on a complaint like this alot. The problem is not in the instrument cluster, nor in the brake lights, nor in a fuse. I am quite sure that if you take your vehicle in, they will find the ECM is the problem. We get calls for these, but I'm not sure why, since the ECM is covered under 8/80 Emmissions warranty, mandated by Federal Law. There is a service bulletin on this condition, as well as a recall on certain models, depending on the VIN. I don't think the extended warranty is extended to subsequent owners. You might want to check on that.
