My wifes automatic transmission is slipping bad and I have taken it in to the shop to be diagnosed. If it needs to be rebuilt, What is a decent estimate of how much it should cost? Just dont want to be ripped off. Thank you, Rob

How many miles are on the car? If you have the 6cy model, Honda has extented the tranny warranty to 100k miles. If they dont cover it, you will need to take it to a tranny shop to be diagnosed. It will cost you to remove transmission, diagnose, cost of new parts to replace, and reinstallation. you might be better off buying a factory refurbished transmission.

Honda has a factory rebuilt trans that should cost about $1200 plus tax and installation. I say 'should' because the dealer marks them up at whatever they can. There are other rebuilders such as H&A transmissions that are competitive. Usually, with labor to install and tax you're looking at about $1900 as a 'best out-the-door' price regardless of whether its a factory transmission or notAlso, if the transmission was involved in the extened honda warranty that warranty extension is expired on time. The warranty extension was for 7 years or 100,000 miles. If its a 1999 you're over the 7 years. You can try calling Honda to see if they will consider assisting you; there number is 1-800-999-1009. Its worth a call.
