The best bet would be a B16A from a 1999-2000 civic SI. Every part from the SI will bolt in a Civic from 1996-2000. The upside other than that is the parts when you need something you can just tell them you need the parts for a 2000 civic SI. If you had the motor/tranny, axles, ECU, three motor mounts, shift linkages, and the wiring harness, you could do this swap in about 12 hours in your garage. If you have more mechanical knowledge and a very good selection of tools then it can be done in under 8 hours. I know I have put over 20 of these engines in a 96-00 civic. I have this swap personally in my 99 civic EX. The power difference is amazing, and after I built it and turboed it, it has been fully sleeved, and built from the crank up, it holds 15 PSI on daily driving putting down 374 HP and on 25 PSI it puts down 497 HP to the front wheels. Some people will say to put a K20 in it, but dont listen to them, the swap alone with parts and labor is about $10,000. That is JUST a regular motor with no extra parts on it. Now you can spend $3,000 for the B16 complete swap, have the engine COMPLETLY built for around $6,000, including the bottom end being sleeved, turbo it, AND build the head for the same price as the K20 swap. Now you can have the 200 HP K20, or a 350+ HP built B16. Your choice.

These are some of the common and popular swaps, B16A motors will work and will be a easy fitB17A1-integra gsr motor 2nd generationB18C5-Integra Type R motorB18C1-Integra GS-R motorb18a or b-very cheap base integra motor. A good improvement over your d series for a very small price. You could also slap on a vtec head to do a ls/vtecB20B/Z block mated with a B16A headH series and F seriesBasically any prelude motor is popularH22A1/4 and the non vtec version the H23A1The F22 and F23 series were less popular due to a SOHC configuration, we all like our motors with more cams and more flow but some of these make good power. And these engines were found in various models of the accord and acura 2.2 models. These are not to be confused with the F20C and the F22C, those last two are the beasts of NA 4 cylinder motors, Good luck stuffing a Honda S2000 motor in you car. Then of course there is the most expensive but best option excluding price, find a k seriesK20A2- RSX type S motor, probably the best motor except for the Z1, without paying a bunch for a type r motor, it will be pricey, but worth it if you have the money.K20A3-RSX base and 02-05 civic si motor, without the "good vtec" No point to this engine, not worth itK20Z1-RSX type s motor a little more power years 05+K20Z3 the 06+ civic si motor, also very goodK23a1- RDX, turbocharged but good luck swapping that, very different mounts. Then any K24 bottom end mated with a k20 vtec head.So the best for price and performance and durability would be the B18C1 a little extra money and displacement or the b16a. If you are really strapped for cash just swap in a b18b, cheap yet still more horsepower and torque and a good starting place.Lots of options you just have to chose what is best suited for your budget, horsepower, torque, and displacement needs. If you need more information or parts contact Hasport performance, they have all your motor mounts and wiring harness needs for the crazy swap you are thinking of.

I see good answers, but If you have plenty of cash $$$ I highly suggest the K20a. 220hp with about 160tq. B series barely push any tq. Fully build a K20a and do major internal work, then turbo charge it. Now that will be fast...sell the shell of ur 02 civic for a EK...even faster. There should be stronger engines than K20a...but the K is the fastest I've seen perform in a hatch & rex.
