That may sound like a stupid question to many of you, but I know nothing about turbochargers on cars. I learned a little bit about them on airplanes when I took a few aircraft mechanics classes during my short duration at college, but that's it.

A turbocharger can be considered an air blower. It differs in a turbo in that is always working (has a preset band of work load), and unlike a turbo can only supply a maximum amount of air or CHARGE hence the name turbo charger. As you would know a Turbo is that a turbine but a Turbine is not limited to a maximum hence allowing further performance than a Turbo charger. I made it as simple as possible, but if you would like to know more visit www.howstuffworks.com.

they dont work all the time unless you reach a certain rpm that its set to go off. many turbo chargers set a boost around 5 - 7 pounds of boost at 4000 or 5000 rpm. the higher rpm you rev on gear the more boost. also the lower the gear your on, the better boost you'll get. if you ever herd that term pop a vtec it means going all out even on redline when you have a vtec honda. like on gsr integras the rpm levels are high and capable untill 11000 rpm untill you blow the motor. so imagine how much boost u can get at 11000 rpm. but yeh sorry if im little confusing.

TURBO Runs time u start the engine. The TURBO runs on the EXHAUST GAS that come out of the tail pipe. The more that you floor the gas pedal the more air the engine intakes and the more Exhaust gas you make The the more the Exhaust gas spins the TURBINE there producing a greater BOOST.TURBOS can spin at as much as 20,000 RPM even with the engine rpms at 5,000.THE TURBO Wast gate and BOOST controller helps control the amount of boost allowed and if you were to take your foot off of the gas suddenly the Wast gate allows the Turbo's back pressure to release through the Intake by way of a BLOW OFF VALVE this is the phisss sound you'll here when a turbo car is shifting gears on the start.
