Here's what Honda had to say on that warning light coming on. The bad news is you're compressor is usually the problem. Your post doesn't mention if the blower mtoro works at all or if it works but you can't redirect the air. The ability to direct the air is separate from the red light problem.A/C Warning Light On:’88–91 PreludeOn ’88–91 Preludes, the red A/C warning light comeson when the speeds of the A/C compressor pulley andthe crankshaft are different for more than 3 seconds. Here’s what can cause the speeds to differ, and how torepair the possible problems:Crankshaft pulley separation. On some models, arubber insulator joins the hub and rim of thecrankshaft pulley. If the bond fails between theinsulator and the hub or rim, the hub turns with thecrankshaft, but the rim slips on the insulator, makingthe A/C warning light come on. To check for thisslippage, draw a line across the pulley. Start theengine, rev it up, then shut it off. Look at the line youdrew on the pulley. If the marks across the hub andrim aren’t still lined up, replace the pulley.Compressor clutch oil seal leakage. On ’88–89models, a leaking oil seal can contaminate thecompressor clutch and cause it to slip, making theA/C warning light come on. Inspect the compressorclutch oil seal, and replace it if necessary (see S/B88-038, A/C Compressor Front Seal Leakage, filedunder Accessories).Compressor pick-up sensor. On ’90 models, adefective pick-up sensor can send a false signal to thecompressor control unit, making the A/C warninglight come on. Check for a defective pick-up sensor, and replace it if necessary (see S/B 90-019, A/CCompressor Pick-up Sensor Set Replacement, filedunder Accessories).Compressor control unit. If the A/C warning light ison without any of the above problems, use an 8Xmagnifier to inspect the solder joints inside thecompressor control unit. If any of the solder jointsare cracked, clean and resolder the printed circuitboard, or replace the compressor control unit.
