You can do that but you will have Junk or salvage title. So you will need to "rebuilt the car" and take it to inspection to DMV.But you can go to DMV with bill of sale and told them that previous owner lost the tilte or something like that.

You do that and there is a possibility you could be making the next license plate for the car! That is illegal! The seller of the car is supposed to furnish you with a marketable title. If he can't, you should be able to get your money back, or file a court action against him. The previous owner can do a title search, then have a replacement title issued through the DMV. Learn a lesson here, never buy a car without a CLEAR title of transferable ownership.

It has probably been chopped and re-built. Buying a car without a title will never be resolved. You will have to go to DMV and request a duplicate title and it will have old names of owners and possible liens. If you do, you will have to get previous owner to sign off on and lienholder to sign off on, then you can tag in your name. If the guy you bought the car from was the owner, then he should have already done all this if he got the car legally.

I assume you can't find this person to get the title. You may have bought a stolen car. Did you at least see the title? Do you have the old registration info? While you can buy a junked or wrecked car and transfer the VIN number on the dashboard this is illegal. Also the VIN number is engraved in the firewall under the hood as well as and you can't change that. Go on carfax.com and check to see if the car is stolen and if it is get rid of it.

You need to write down the VIN number and tag number and go to the tag office and have them look them up.The person either lost the title ,and if that is the case he can apply for a lost title and when he gets it he can sign it over to you. However he might say he doesnt have it because it is either stolen,or there is a lean on the car

Ask your local DMV that how you can do the transfer without a title. In California, you can do a paperless transfer. Just have to fill out a form.

What you want to do it illegal. You can't simply switch vin's like that legally. Your real vin # is etched on to the car in multiply places, so if someone happens to look and sees 2 different vin's; you're screwed. You need to go to the DMV and get a new title, bring your bill of sale & everything else you have with you.
