As with most japanese cars (especially Honda & Mazda) they top the reliability polls year in year out - if you are thinking of buying one get one with main dealer service history

Dear Prospective Honda Owner, There are many potential problems that may arise with more recent Civic models. Firstly, and possibly the most dangerous problem that could arise, though not all that common, is "Ghostmist" in the glovebox. I know this sounds highly improbable, but there is an epidemic of "Ghostmist" related deaths in the U.S. at the current time. "Ghostmist" is the common name for a phenomenon relating to a short in the glovebox light and the level of wiper fluid in your Civic. When the fluid level gets low, a "Ghostmist" forms in your glovebox. After the accretion of the "Ghostmist" it seeps out into the cabin of the vehicle, which can cause loss of motor skills, impared judgement, poor punctuation, birth defects, and bad dancing skills. You have been warned! The Civic may also experience any number of these problems:1: Inverted steering at an excess of 75 mph.2: The Civic tends to not yield at crosswalks.3: Dramatic decrease in gas mileage while using the 8 track.4: Car may suddenly fail to respond unless you use the "special" word.5: Civics have a tendency to leak blinker fluid.6:Seatbelts may become increasingly tight for no apparent reason, suffocating the driver and/or passengers.7: The sanctity of your civic may be fouled.8: Oh, and uh, Texas.

the front end on the new ones looks ace, especially the type-R version, but the rear end is ugly.

First of all, this is one of the most general question's i've ever seen. They've been making the Civic for decades. (unfortunatly). The biggest defects are 1) it's front wheel drive.2) it's too easy for people to slap some stickers, a trash can exhaust, and a spoiler on it and think they're a race car driver.

Don't listen to these losers who are currently making repairs to their current redneck vehicles of choice. The fact is the Civic is the most reliable car on the planet!!!! Always has been, always will be.

The civic is one of the most reliable cars on the road, i've had my coupe LSi from new in May 1994, still goes like hell. Have done 210k miles with no major problems. Its battered and banged but I love it, will be a sad day when it finally goes, whenever that may be ? Honda cars are magic, Japanese engineering made in Britain.
