VTEC is Hondas way of saying "Variable Timing Electronic Controlled". Toyota has one called VVTi and many other companies do as well. It automatic adjusts the timing at different points for maximum performance and efficiency. It sounds impossible to do that with a timing system- both at the same time, but believe me, it works. Look at the Toyota Corolla with it 40+ mpg out of a 1.8 liter torquey engine and the older Honda Civic HX and VX models that delivered almost Hybrid-like gas mileage figures.Nissan originated the variable valve system back in 1986 on the 1987 Nissan Pulsar's CA16DE twin cam engine. While it seems like a dog by today's standard, that motor's technology can be seen in the 300ZX and Skyline performance cars. The Skyline's RB engine actually is the CA engine with two extra cylinders and a larger displacement. Anyway, Honda put more R&D into the idea and has been the pioneer in innovations on the system. They weren't the first, but they've done the most (and possibly the best) with the variable timing system. They definitely have used it in more applications than any other company. Who would've thought of a N/A 4 cylinder designed for the street that puts out more horsepower than most tuirbocharged 4 cylinder engines? Honda did with the help of VTEC and it is as reliable as any other Honda engine while delivering better gas mileage and performance than most of it's non-vtec engines. They are now able to tune a streetable engine to do wonders with unbelievable power. Not only that, a non VTEC can be converted to a VTEC with less work than turbocharging it.
